Taking the next step...

Here is the story of how Oscar and I came to be married, and like our first meeting and subsequent love connection, it is also a very interesting and amusing story...

(Oscar and I after we were officially married, downtown Sacramento September 15, 2005)

In 2005 I had been working for Wells Fargo for some time and accumulated a large savings from working overtime hours and such (and also from consistently telling Oscar that we were "broke" haha). So, we decided that we wanted to take a vacation together. I browsed the internet and found a reasonable deal for a cruise to Mexico from Los Angles and stopping at 3 different ports in Mexico: Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. I purchased our tickets and then recieved an email from our travel agent... "I am sorry to tell you that you must be 21 years old to go a Royal Caribbean cruise or if under 21 you must be traveling with someone 25 or older. There is an exception to the rule, if the couple is married there is no age requirement for travel..." I was 18 years old, Oscar was 19 years old. So, we discussed it and decided that since we planned on getting married one day anyways, we would just make it official and call the cruise our honeymoon! I know, crazy, right?

Well, we purchased the rings and made the appointment. I kept telling Oscar, "You know you still have to propose to me!" I wouldn't wear the ring until he did. He told me that he wasn't going to propose and "what was the point since we were already getting married?". Such a tough guy! Well, one morning when I got home from work with my "Betos" chimichangas at 4am and ready to wake Oscar for our "us" time, I turned the front door handle and opened it to find our living room, covered in lit candles and Oscar down on one knee, waiting for me. I don't remember what was said, all I remember was being shocked because I really thought he was serious about the proposal! I think I said "yes" (haha), but nonetheless Oscar and I were married at the courthouse in Downtown Sacramento on September 15th, 2005. Then we started to pack for Mexico.

(I love the look on his face in that photo, admiring the rock he put on my finger that day)

We had exactly two months until we would set sail for Mexico where we could legally drink! whoohoo! We actually considered being married in Vegas, but since we were 18 and 19 years old at the time, decided Mexico was a better option, so we could party! So, we booked a little wedding ceremony on the cruise ship to replace the big and expensive wedding we had decided against having. In those two months we kept the marriage on the hush and prepared for our trip. We even drove out to Ocean's Beach and I took our engagement photos, with a self timer and a tripod.

 (See "Pepperoni", that little brat-dog!)

I love Disneyland. It is a love that I will never get over (I even cry at the fireworks shows... I know, crazy right!?). So, since we were departing on our cruise from Los Angeles I suggested to Oscar that we spend a day at Disneyland before we go. He told me that he had been to Disneyland once, but he was too young to remember. "What!? That's it, then, we need to spend 5 days at Disneyland before the cruise. We can't see everything in one day!" So we planned and booked the first leg of our trip to be at Disneyland, during "Holiday at the Park". Christmas is my favorite. Christmas at Disneyland is something that I had never experienced but couldn't wait to do.

(In our hotel room, at The Radisson, first night of our honeymoon)

It was so funny to me that when we actually left on the trip and I told Oscar "Buy whatever you want, we eat wherever we want, spend money however you want to..." he said "I thought we were broke!?" (Remember I said I always told Oscar that we were broke, haha) and I had to explain that yes we were broke, because I was saving our money for this trip and now we get the spend the money we saved! We had an amazing time at Disneyland. We rode every ride and ate at nice restaurants. We took photos and bought souvenirs and just enjoyed our time. I think one of the 5 days we just stayed in the hotel and chilled out, didn't even leave to get food.

After 5 days in "The Happiest Place on Earth" we were ready to relax at set sail with Royal Caribbean cruises to Mexico! We had excursions planned for each port and we were all ready for some fun shopping in Mexico, too! The cruise ship was beautiful and our room was quaint. We had buffet food for breakfast and lunch, formal dinners and there was even a 24/7 french fry/hotdog/and hamburger bar. We went to the movies and while there was much to do on the ship, sometimes we just layed in our room and slept and watched the festivities on television that projected what we were missing out on the deck.We gambled a little in the casino, where I won about $40 on the first day. We shopped at the duty free shops on board and took walks around the main deck of the ship. We went swimming and soaked our tired and sore feet (from walking Disneyland for 5 days) in the hot tub. It was so relaxing and so much fun.

In Cabo San Lucas we went on a glass bottom boat tour and saw "Lovers Rock" among other highlighted sights. We shopped and walked around, looking at the sights.

In Mazatlan we took a city tour where we visited the city's cathedral, farmers market, flower market, a few local vendors selling hand crafted items, we also saw The Papantla Flyers, some traditional Mexican dancers, and even the "Mexican Cliff Divers".

In Puerto Vallarta we spent the day shopping the flea market and that evening we took a "Booze Cruise" out to sea on a pirate ship, where we ate steak and shrimp (which were not that great, but I will admit I was a little seasick) and drank unlimited beer and wine (the beer tasted watered down). So that part of the trip wasn't my favorite, but it was an experience!

So, there you have it. Our love story, our wedding story, and the beginning of a new beginning.
